The History of the Mountain Ash RFC Singers Bernard Cushion, a former back row forward, who had conducted a Mountain Ash RFC Choir from 1962 to 1969, was persuaded to oversee these rehearsals. Following a very enjoyable weekend the 18 who went on the trip stayed together, continued to practice, and are the nucleus of the current Mountain Ash RFC Singers. Bernard, a talented musician and singer, continued to conduct the Choir until the early 90’s when he was forced, due to ill health, to lay down his baton. David Lewis, a second tenor with the Choir picked it up with enthusiasm and has proven to be a very able successor. David has brought a new dimension to the Choir that can be heard in their current repertoire. The Choir is unique in that it sings unaccompanied. This has often proved to be an advantage. Being a small group of choristers the Choir can fit into the odd corner of a pub or church hall. The Choir rehearses on Sunday evenings from 7.30 p.m. for two hours at the R.A.F Club in Mountain Ash. These rehearsals are as much a social gathering as practices, as all the choristers enjoy each other’s company. During the evening there is a short break to discuss Choir business and have course to get in fresh supplies of refreshments. These meetings are often hilarious with a high standard of repartee between Choir members. The Choir season starts on the first Sunday in September and continues through until late July. The Choir welcomes visitors to rehearsals especially from abroad. Today the Choir boasts twenty-nine singing members plus their librarian Hugh
Allen, who accompanies the Choir to most of their concerts. In addition to their charitable work the Choir have entertained at a number of prestigious venues, including the former National Stadium, Cardiff Castle , The National Ice Rink and The Birmingham International Conference Centre. The Choir has a remarkable record of successes throughout the U.K. having appeared on Television on various occasions, also sharing the concert stage with many famous artists including Michael Ball, who is an honorary member of the Choir. The Choir’s President is Mr. Denis Bryant, a former Mountain Ash RFC Captain, the current Mountain Ash RFC President and now one of the town’s senior solicitors. The Choir has two vice presidents, Malcolm Sanders a local businessman and Tony Ball (Father of Michael). Both have played a part in the Choir’s success over the years. “Choral singing is a rewarding hobby. Choristers enjoy good company, friendship and gain great pleasure from the appreciation shown by audiences at concerts. Without any obligation or audition why not come along to the next rehearsal night of The Mountain Ash RFC Singers and share in an enjoyable pastime.” For further information please contact Terry Benney (Choir Secretary) on 01443 475049 or 478501
